Copy of Mr. Balmforth's statement. I have requisitioned this meeting today as I consider an emergency has arisen in the case of the negotiations for the proposed transfer of D. Hickson and the reports of the position appear to be in part contradictory. The brief reasons are given in my notice of requisition. I feel that every one of the Directors should receive at first hand an up to date report of the position, so that the Board may decide whether or not any immediate action ought to be taken. Certain members of the Board are, I understand, adamant in their view that no action be taken, and that the Board on Tuesday decided to make an offer and to leave the matter open for further discussion in 14 days time. I contend that whilst in agreement with the decision to make the offer, believing that the Huddersfield F. C., would either reduce its terms or accept the offer ultimately, I had doubts at the time as to the wisdom of the 14 day deferment of the question, but admit that I voted in favour of this proposal also. Nevertheless in view of the immediate reaction of the Huddersfield Club in turning down on Wednesday morning the offer made by us and by making a counter offer of £6,500 and adding to it an ultimatum of acceptance by Friday, I feel strongly that the Board should meet before the expiry of the date named and to take the responsibility as a Board of either (a) considering to make a further offer, (b) accepting the present offer of £6,500, or (c) deciding to confirm deferment, realising that the latter would in the view of a number of us cancel out any chance of securing the player's services. I propose, Mr. Chairman, that before we take any further steps, that we hear the report of the position as known to any member or stipendiary who had had contact by telephone which Mr. Shankley this could include Mr. Sharp, Mr. Buchan, Mr. Dickinson and I propose that these gentlemen be heard.
