Registration of a Postal Packet (For fuller details see Post Office Guide) INLAND 1. Compensation in respect of loss of or damage to a registered inland postal packet is not payable unless such conditions as are prescribed by Post Office Regulations in relation to inland postal packets have been complied with in respect of the packet. The Regulations provide, (a) that the packet must be made up in a reasonably strong cover and (except in the case of a printed packet, sample packet, or newspaper packet) the packet must be fastened with wax, gum or other adhesive substance, or, where suit- able, securely fastened with string which is sealed with wax or which is secured at each end by means of a lead, steel or strong metal seal crushed with a press. The packet must be so made up that no part of the contents can be removed without either breaking or tearing the cover; (b) money in the form of coin or paper money must be enclosed in one of the registered letter envelopes sold by the Post Office. Coin in excess of a total value of £5 shall not be enclosed; (c) where a packet has been deliv- ered and loss of or damage to the contents is alleged, the cover of the packet must be produced for inspection. 2. The compensation payable shall not exceed, (a) the market value of the packet, or (b) the maximum amount prescribed in Post Office Regulations. 3. Registration in the international service is not a system of insurance. Compensation is not paid for loss or damage of contents as distinct from loss of the entire packet, and the payment made in no circumstances exceeds £2 18s.
