Charlie Gee, returning thanks on behalf of all players, said "I would
like to assure Mr. Gibbins and the Directors how we appreciate this
wonderful gesture on the part of the Board. When I went away from Goodison
Park in the first week of the War, I felt—and probably mostly of you felt
the same — having put in nine years and got one benefit, that it was a case
of hard luck for me, for I reckoned the other four years were "dead". Now
we get this splendid acknowledgement. It is an entirely in solicited
testimonial to the great traditions of the Everton Football Club,
You can always rest assured that if anybody pays it will be the
Everton Club, and sure enough here they are today with this wonderful
gesture. Here you witness service paid, not only in full, but in more than
full. I have always found it true, that everything you give to the Everton
club is repaid generously. I can't do anything about it in the future,
for my playing days are over, but you who are coming on can show the apprec-
iation which we who have finished cannot, and I hope you will show it in no
uncertain manner."
