Dean was revered for his sportsmanship as well as his talent, as he was never booked or dismissed. He made 433 appearances and scored 383 goals for Everton, and also gained 16 England caps. Fittingly Dean died at Goodison after watching a Derby match. Later Bill Shankly praised his friend saying: "Dixie was the greatest centre-forward there will ever be".
