On 31 December 1936, Theo Kelly, the secretary-manager of Everton, signed Tommy Lawton from Burnley as a potential replacement for Dean. Kelly viewed Dean as a possible rival to his ambition to become Everton's first manager. Three games into the 1937/38 season Kelly dropped him from the first team to the reserves. In March 1938 the unthinkable happened and Dean was sold to Notts County.
