Dean was made team captain at the start of the 1931/32 season. Initially his play was eclipsed by that of Jimmy Dunn and Tommy White. It wasn't until the sixth game against Liverpool at Anfield on 19 September that he scored, he then made a hat-trick. Dean scored 45 goals in 38 games and Everton won the League Championship.
