When Dean was absent through injury Everton struggled. Throughout the 1928/29 and 1929/30 seasons he was plagued by injury, and the Blues were relegated to the Second Division. It was to prove a short stay. Everton spent most of the 1930/31 season at the top of the Division, winning the Championship and promotion.
