William Ralph Dean, nicknamed Dixie Dean, is regarded as the greatest Everton player of all time. Born in Birkenhead in 1907, from an early age he played football regularly. Dean practised by throwing a ball on to a chapel roof and heading it as it descended. In 1923 he signed for Tranmere Rover. Dean credited team mate Ellis Rimmer with providing many of the crosses for his goals.
