The official opening of Goodison Park by Lord Kinnaird on 25 August 1892 was a spectacular affair. It included athletic events such as a one mile walk and a three legged race. Prizes were awarded of £4.00 for first place, £2.00 for second, and £1.00 for third. Kelly Brothers were asked to provide 6 men on the roof of the covered stand in case the fireworks started a fire!
