Transforming the Mere Green Field into Goodison Park cost Everton around £3,500. This was £1,000 more than the Club's assets. Luckily help was at hand; by 3 December 1892 Baxter had advanced the Club the shortfall. He asked for no security and no interest. Baxter devoted much of his time to Everton, serving on the Board of Directors from 1889 until his death in 1928.
