In 1909 Everton and Spurs achieved a footballing first when they agreed to go on an overseas' tour, travelling 14,000 miles to Argentina and Uruguay. Football was increasingly popular in South America and it was thought that a visit by two professional, English clubs would boost interest in the game. Everton had finished runners-up in the First Division in 1908-09, and Spurs were runners-up in the Second.
