One of Kirkwood's duties was scouting. In May 1922 he accompanied Will Cuff to see Alec Troup play for Dundee. Both were impressed by Troup's talent and the directors agreed to try and sign him, eventually succeeding in 1923. Dixie Dean credited Troup with providing many of the crosses for his goals. Kirkwood also had time for hobbies and evidently enjoyed a game of bowls.
