In June 1915 Kirkwood retired as a director but wasn't re-elected. During the First World War members of his family may have suffered financial hardship as in July 1918 they sold their Everton shares. On 6th September 1920 the board voted to ask Kirkwood to become manager of the A Team on a wage of £4.00 a week. He agreed and held the post until his death 8 years later.
