Kirkwood had to manage unrest amongst players during the 1909-10 season. Many Everton footballers joined the Players' Union to demand fairer pay and contracts. The F.A. disapproved of the Union and suspended players from the Football League without pay. The Everton directors put pressure on their players to leave the Union, but they refused.
