Kirkwood was evidently trusted. In May 1909 the chairman, Ernest Bainbridge, went on tour to South America leaving a seal of office with Kirkwood, who acted as chairman in his absence. Kirkwood was chairman in the 1909-10 season. He presided over substantial alterations to Goodison including the building of a new double decker stand at the North End designed by Archibold Leitch.
