In 1903 and 1904 Kirkwood polled most votes in the annual elections. As a director he helped to improve facilities for players, including equipping the first club gym in 1903. With Dr. Baxter and Mr Davies he oversaw the furnishing of a billiard room for players in 1909-10. Kirkwood was compassionate - in September 1913 he arranged a collection at Goodison for former team mate Alec Brady.
