The directors valued Kirkwood's knowledge of the game. In December 1901 he was asked to give Alex 'Sandy' Young help with the "centre forward game". Young went on to score the winning goal in Everton's F.A. Cup 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in 1906. Kirkwood recognised Young's talent as he recommended that the directors increase his wages, and they did.
