In 1890 Kirkwood went on two tours with Everton. The first was to Glasgow and Sunderland. The team arrived in Glasgow on the evening of Friday, 18 April and stayed at the George Hotel. A journalist reported that Everton did not want to risk their reputation by travelling overnight before a match! The tactic obviously worked as Everton won 6-2 over Rangers at Ibrox.
