Kirkwood's duties as a director included regular scouting trips such as one to Nottingham Forest to engage Robert Beveridge on 8 October 1900. He took his turn as director in charge of the gate, going to Sheffield United's Bramall Lane Stadium on Christmas day in 1900. A trip which probably wasn't too popular with his family!
