Kirkwood stood for election as an Everton director in 1899. That year he failed to get in, but in May 1900 he succeeded. Kirkwood became a member of the Ground and the Stores Sub-Committees which he sat on for several years. One benefit of being a director was getting free tickets to matches. In September Kirkwood and other directors were allocated 50 tickets each.
