Kirkwood remained friendly with the Everton directors as they gave him complimentary tickets for the members' stand for the 1896-97 season. Kirkwood was a grocer with a licensed shop by the time his fourth child, Daniel, was born in August 1898. He was obviously doing well as on 18 August he bought shares in Everton. Kirkwood also had an interest in Liverpool F.C. as he held a season ticket for 1898-99.
