Will Cuff (1868-1949)
William Charles Cuff was the most successful administrator in Everton's history. As Club Chairman between 1921 and 1938, Cuff was responsible for signing Dixie Dean and Tommy Lawton and led Everton to two League Championship titles and an F.A. Cup Final victory.
As a boy Will Cuff was a member of St Domingo's choir, so grew up following Everton. A trained solicitor, Cuff became an Everton Director in 1895 and was Club Secretary from 1901 to 1919.
Cuff organised the first ever overseas tour to South America in 1909 and created the Central League for the reserve teams of professional clubs in 1911. He personally managed the Everton reserve side, which rarely lost.
Appointed Chairman in 1921, Cuff immediately took control of the Club. On the 17th March 1925 Cuff signed Everton legend, Dixie Dean. Eight years later, Dean captained Everton in the 1933 F.A. Cup final, when all players wore numbered shirts for the first time in history - another of Will Cuff's ideas. Cuff was also responsible for Goodison Park becoming the first ground to have two-tiered stands on all sides.
Cuff stood down as Chairman at the beginning of the 1938/39 season to take up his position as Chairman of The Football League. But he remained an Everton director almost to the end of his life.
