What happened in Everton's history this week:

10 May 1986 -
Liverpool narrowly defeat Everton 3-1 in Merseyside FA Cup Final. Gary Lineker gave Everton the lead after outpacing Alan Hansen and shooting past Bruce Grobbelaar. Everton contained Liverpool well until an unforced Gary Stevens error, which led to Ian Rush scoring. Five minutes later Liverpool scored again and Ian Rush scored his second just 6 minutes from time to wrap the game up. Read the entire 1986 Cup Final programme here.

11 May 1963 - Everton win the League for the first time since 1939. Everton completed their season with a 4-1 win over Fulham at Goodison Park thanks to a Roy Vernon hat-trick and Alex Scott. This ensured Everton were undefeated at home all season. Read the Fulham match programme here.

12 May 1945 - Alan Ball is born in Farnworth. Ball joined Everton in August 1966 just weeks after winning the World Cup. Adored by Everton fans, Ball helped Everton win the League in 1970, before moving to Arsenal in 1971. Click here to see all Alan Ball memorabilia.

14 May 1966 - Everton defeat Sheffield Wednesday to win the FA Cup! Wednesday started the game stronger, taking the lead after only 4 minutes. Wednesday scored a second just short of the hour and it appeared as though Everton were finished. However, just 2 minutes after Wednesday's second goal, Mike Trebilcock grabbed one back for Everton. Five minutes later Trebilcock scored again, levelling the scores with a low drive. With 10 minutes left, Derek Temple dribbled up to the Wednesday goal and slotted the ball past Wednesday keeper, Springett, to score a dramatic winner. Read the full 1966 Cup Final programme here.

15 May 1985 - Everton win the European Cup Winners' Cup! After knocking the tournament favourites, Bayern Munich, out in the semi's, Everton faced a strong Rapid Vienna team in the Final in Rotterdam. Everton were unlucky to have a goal disallowed before half-time, after Derek Mountfield was mistakenly ruled to be offside. In the 57th minute Andy Gray latched on to a pass from Graeme Sharp to open the scoring. Trevor Steven added a second on 72 minutes before Rapid got one back. Kevin Sheedy calmed Everton's nerves with a third goal and the 50,000 travelling fans could then begin celebrating.

16 May 1942 - Lawton scores hat-trick against City. Everton defeat Manchester City 6-1 with Tommy Lawton scoring a hat-trick, Frank Soo (2) and Anderson also scoring. Read the match programme here.
