To commemorate Dixie Dean's record breaking 60 goals in a season, May's object of the month is a copy of the Liverpool Echo newspaper from the day it all happened - 5th May 1928.

With Everton already crowned League champions by the 5th May, the pressure to defeat Arsenal was off. However the Goodison crowd of "possibly 60,000" came to witness the handing over of the League trophy and watch history unfold as Dixie Dean attempted to overtake George Camsell's record of 59 goals in a season.

Arsenal took the lead after just 2 minutes. Dean levelled the score inside a minute to take his tally to 58 for the season. Three minutes later he scored a penalty and thus drew level with Camsell's record of 59 goals.

Everton's desire to assist Dean in his record attempt caused problems, for with every ball and cross seeking him out, Arsenal were able to exploit the spaces created elsewhere, equalising 10 minutes before half-time.

The second half was a mixture of emotions, for almost everyone inside the ground was willing Dean to score. With time rapidly running out it seemed as though the chance had gone. Then, with barely 8 minutes to go, Alec Troup took a corner and Dean rose above all others to head home his 60th goal of the season.

As the Echo reported, "There has never been such a joyful shout at Everton. It was prolonged for minutes and went on to the end of the game. The crowd never stopped cheering for eight solid minutes and Dean was hugged by all his comrades".
