What happened in Everton's history this week:

May 1930 - Everton relegated to the Second Division for the first time in their history. Despite Everton defeating Spurs 4-1, results elsewhere conspired against them. Two seasons previously almost the same Everton team had been League champions! Read the Spurs match programme here.

May 1928 - Dixie scores 60th goal for the season! With Everton already crowned League champions, a Goodison crowd of 48,715 came to witness the lifting of the trophy and watch Dixie attempt to overtake George Camsell's record of 59 goals in a season. Arsenal were the opponents and it was they who took the lead after just 2 minutes. Dean levelled the score inside a minute to take his tally to 58 for the season. Three minutes later he drew level with Camsell from the penalty spot. The atmosphere grew tense as almost everyone inside the ground was willing Dean to score. With 8 minutes left, Alec Troup took a corner kick and Dean rose above all others to head home his 60th goal of the season. 6 May 1981 - Gordon Lee sacked as manager of Everton. Lee joined in January 1977 and took the Club to the League Cup Final. See Gordon Lee memorabilia here.

May 1932 - Everton win the League despite losing to Portsmouth. Before the Portsmouth match, Everton were already assured of the League title, being 4 points ahead of Arsenal in second place. A 24,011 Goodison crowd turned up to celebrate, but Portsmouth spoilt the party winning the match 1-0. Read the match programme here.

May 1981 - Howard Kendall appointed manager of Everton. A former Everton player, Kendall previously managed Blackburn Rovers. After an initial rocky period at Goodison, Kendall went on to lead Everton to 2 League titles, the FA Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup. He resigned in 1987 to take over at Athletico Bilbao. See all Howard Kendall memorabilia here.

May 1931 - Jimmy Gauld is born in Aberdeen. Gauld joined Everton in October 1956 for £10,500, making 23 first-team appearances before leaving for Plymouth a year later. Gauld is perhaps best remembered for his role in the 1960s match fixing betting ring. Gauld had not only set up the betting ring but was also responsible for their downfall, selling his story to a national newspaper for £7,000. See all Jimmy Gauld memorabilia here.
